Is it worth the cost of a battery?

How much is your family and house worth? The cost of a 9 volt battery? I hope not because that's all it takes to keep your family safe and your property less damaged than it could be. Part of your monthly routine should be to push the button on your smoke detectors to ensure they still work. You should get a quick ear splitting tone if it's working properly. In the event you begin to hear intermittent chirping in the house this is usually an indicator that the battery is losing it's charge. As a safety procedure every smoke detector, that I'm aware of, has a built in mechanism to sound the chirp when battery power deminishes, leaving you enough time to determine which one is low and replace it. The best thing you can do to stay on top of your batteries is to choose a particular date, such as 1st day of summer, Cinco de Mayo, Arbor Day, whatever as the day you change ALL smoke detector batteries each and every year. Doing this simple task will ensure you have a fresh battery in place in case the worst happens. You still want to do the monthly check just in case you get a defective or old battery by mistake. You may not save a lot of money buying 9 volt batteries each year but lives are a bigger savings!
