Air Condition Your Garage w/o Taxes

In many, if not most, states you will incur a tax on your property if you incorporate an air conditioning duct into your garage. Why is this? It is stated that by doing so you have made a storage area that is not habitable into a habitable living space, which is taxable. What are you to do if you want to make the temperature more comfortable out with the shop tools and car? Well, there are a few things you can do to alleviate this heat problem. The first and probably least expensive would be to go with a sliding screen door across the opening of the garage. This is good for air circulation but no good for privacy and heat distribution. If it's hot and humid outside it will be inside with a screen. Another idea would be to install a ceiling vent fan to draw the hot air up into the attic so the roof vents can get rid of it. You'll still have a warm garage though! The next thing you could do would be to install a window air conditioner in the door or wall and switch on as necessary. It will cool the garage until the door opens and it can be removed. Lastly, uyou can run an a/c dust to the garage and let it cool the garage like the house, based on the house temp not the garage. What about the taxes? How many time has an adjuster come into your house for an assessment? If your really clever because you fear the worst you can always find a way to camouflage it and turn your a/c off while the inspector is there so it won't give it away. Maybe a fishing rod rack mounted on a board with a hinge over the vent? Just a thought. The vent is the cleanest and easiest way, just hope you don't need an adjuster.
