Contrary to what you may be thinking this is not a Halloween post. Well, actually Halloween has a big part in it but is not the subject. The subject is scorpions! From the east coast to the west coast and areas in between, you know about scorpions. Most are non-poisonous, such as the ones in the southeast in states like Florida. In fact these scorpions tend to run and inch or two and are just a nuisance more than anything. When you get out to arid areas like Arizona things get a lot different. There you will find the poisonous ones and should be avoided at all costs, unless your a bug nut or something! Let me get to the Halloween tie-in to the scorpion story and it's pretty neat, if I do say so myself! During this time of year just about every retail or wholesale shop that sells Halloween goods will also be selling portable black lights. How do these make a scorpion connection? Simple, scorpions luminess under the black lights beam. They actually appear as a greenish color when illuminated this way. You just turn off your household lights and go through the rooms with the light on and look for the green scorpions.
Usually, I will find them in my Florida home around April when it starts getting warmer and a little wetter outside. Of course they made a liar out of me and surfaced yesterday in my bedroom. Needless to say you can predict but you can't guarantee when they'll show up. The Halloween black lights are a small handheld fluorescent tube unit that's battery powered and is usually very inexpensive. Do yourself a big favor and buy one or two of these because once the holiday is over it's almost impossible to find them again. Once you light up your first scorpion you'll say, "Cool!".
A note of warning: Black lights are Ultra Violet and should never be stared at or severe damage to your eyes can occur!
