It's Time to Kill Next Years Weed Beds!

Some people say that this is when all the weeds die off and they don't need to be concerned about them until next spring. To this I say "your nuts!". This is the perfect time, the air is cool and the soil is workable and most importantly, the dead weeds are easy to spot. This is a great time to dig them out, treat your soil with some good amendments (post ash, lime, etc.) and generally prepare to enjoy the spring flowers in a few months time. What I like to do is clear an area that I want a particular way next growing season. I set the soil and place a weed barrier on it and cover the edges with some bricks or other heavy stones. I leave some leaf material on the barrier to insulate the soil over the winter months and leaf blow them away in the spring when the ground isn't frozen anymore. I'll then make cuts in the fabric where plants, flowering or vegetables, will go and then put a thick layer of mulch on the fabric. The plants can grow through the fabric but the weeds will have no sun to grow. Last year, my vegetable garden looked like something out of a magazine, nothing but veggies and little to no weeding at all. This fall I'm covering more ground so that during the summer months all I have to worry about is mowing the lawn and eating the garden goodies! Enjoy nature!
