Should You Trade Your SUV? Hybrid vs. Conventional

You'd think it would be a no-brainer, but the reality is that trading in your SUV for a more fuel-efficient vehicle may not save you money. SUV resale values are down as much as 40%, and that's if you can find an auto dealer that will take your your gas guzzler. Meanwhile, the average hybrid costs 20% more than a conventional car-and you'll pay hundreds of dollars in taxes and fees on any new vehicle. For a typical swap, it will take nearly five years to break even on the deal for a family with average driving habits. If you decide to trade in your SUV, a conventional car with good fuel efficiency may be more economical than a hybrid.
